okie dokie. so arrived in cairns at 7 in the morning and we were quickly whisked away to our new home for the next few days - the cairns colonial club. the best way to describe this place is like a posh motel woth everything you need and dont need. anyway that day was mainly taken up by just settling into oz by going around town, going on the interweb and getting confused by the simple bus system. the main topic of convo for the whole day between marc and i was the pure speculation of who was going to be on our tour and if it was going to be as good as we had hoped...........
our second day in cairns pretty much wemt to answer the previous days queries. it was the 4th of july and THE START OF THE CONTIKI BEACHES AND REEFS TOUR 2009!!!! pretty much straight away in the morning we met in the computer room of our hotel/motel. 46 hopeful faces all excited and anxious at what was in store. after sum paperwork our tour guide dan or dano stood up to introduce himself and get everyone in the mood for a great trip!! after meeting as many people as possible, we were straight away sent to our bus and met our driver, horse. horse was the man. 7ft tall, no bull and an all round awesome guy. no messing around tho, we were taken to our very first activity of the 2 week trip, yo an aboriginal settlement. here we threw spears and boomerangs, watched an aboriginal dance and playedthe digereedoo. i was poor at everything apart from the boomerang - alog with marc i was one of the best in the group!!! yes!!!
after meeting a few new people and buying my own boomerang, we went back to the hotel and met our new room mate. ben. funnily enough ben was also around 7ft tall and an all round legend who turned out to be a really good mate for the entire tour.
that night we went out to a small spot called the woolshed which was a cool nightclub which at some pooint in the evening required everyone to get up on the tables and dance. it was a fun experience with 40 other people i didnt know plus i didnt fall off!!
ok so in a rather hungover state and at s*** o'clock in the early morning we went to the great barrier reef - gbr. the whole experience was incredible being aboe to swim so close to all the fish and coral. i even tried my hand at scooba diving to get really involved. ive gott asay it was incredible i loved it, my ears however didnt. it took a while to equalise but when i did it was well worth it. even go a picture with a giant wrass called wally whilst holding a sea cucumber - dodgy sounding sentence!!!!!!
the rest of the day was split between getting to know more people on the tour and preparing for the next days activity - a 14000ft skydive!! woooooooooooooohoooooooooooooooo!!!
so here it was the day of the dive. since seeing my big bro elliot take the dive in oz some years back, i have always wanted to give it a go. so, not really that nervous me marc and juan from colombia all set off to the office. on arrival we were told the news that no one wanted to hear, the plane was 'broken' and we had to iether wait for another one or re-book. juan was having none of it as he was s***ting himself and demanded to go on the day we all agreed and then began the wait...........for 3 hours!!
not much happened in this time other than coffee and a chat about the history of the english monarchy!!
then the time came, we were strapped up and did a little intro for our video and were ready to jump!!
on the plane as we ascended, my jumpmaster was busy taking photos and making poor chat. i just couldnt believe what i was about to do but was excited. then the moment came. the green light came on for the dz(drop zone) and we shuffled to the edge of the plane with legs dangling 14000ft up! before i knew it we had fallen out and i shouted some things which ii wouldnt repeat to my mum!! the whole rush was unlike anything else with the speed the views and even going through a cloud!! the landing was painless and all i wanted to do was go up and have another dive. it was awesome!!
the rest of the day was spend talking about the dive to any1 who would listen and preparing for the famous whitsundays cruise, which was our next destination on the tour after cairns.
so conlcludes the cairns leg of the trip so stay tuned for another blog soon.
i have noticed that the dates on of the blogs are from when i have written them, not when they have taken place. just ignore the dates and try to piece all the blogs together like one fun puzzle of holiday fun!! another day, another blog.............
