So after 28 hours on a couple of Greyhound buses we arrived in the glorious San Francisco! Bleary eyed we found our way to a bus and eventually to a cosy Hostel on Ellis Street. After dumping the bags we took a walk to the bay and traversed San Francisco's hilly relief before returning to the Hostel to get a good nights rest.
On the Saturday we rose to attend a cycling tour of the Golden Gate Bridge. Our enthusiastic guide Larry lead us up to the giant structure and informed us that the bridge itself takes three years to paint and is painted every three years. So in essence it is being perpetually painted. He also told us of a time when University students dangled a VW Beetle from the bridge from a giant bungee cord, which was later cut by the authorities to send it into the depths of the bay. We cycled across the bridge and down into the bustling tourist town of Sausalito and on to Tiburon. The ride was about 34km long in total and by the time we reached the ferry back to town we were ready for a rest. We returned the bikes and made our way down town to find food and sunglasses for Craig. I am pleased to report we were successful in finding a suitable pair and Craig's eyes are now well protected again. We moseyed back up the street to Union Square where Woody Allens film "Manhatten" was playing on a huge screen in the park. There was a good turn out and we spoke to the grocer sitting next to us about what a good idea we thought the whole thing was.
On Sunday we walked a good few blocks to attend the City Church of San Francisco who had some good worship songs and sermon. We made our way back to the Hostel and prepared for a trip to the seaside. It was the first time either of us had ever seen the Pacific Ocean in all its glory and it was great to stroll down the beach in the sunshine and sand. We turned inland to take a gander at Golden Gate Park. We wandered around and eventually came across a free archery range with many afternoon participants. We got talking to one chap named Ed. We had a long conversation with him talking about the technical side of archery and what living in San Francisco was like. We got on to the subject of Church and found out he too was Christian and was very encouraged to hear about our trip and how we were still going to Church. We were equally buoyed by this encounter and it was a great day all round. Later we returned to find Craig had a picture message on his phone so we looked it up and all i can say is - wow! We saw the photo of ourselves in the pub and it kept us going for days, thanks to everyone involved, it means a lot!
On the Monday we went to Yosemite National Park and got up super early to take the 4 hour drive out there. Our tour guide Mitch was in a hurry to see everything and was an interesting fellow. Our first stop was the Giant Sequoias trees and they lived up to their name. They are certainly the biggest living things we have ever seen! Next stop was the valley where we were taken to a couple of waterfalls and then got dropped off and set free to do what we wished. We hung out with a cool couple from Southport, England and ventured round some trails ending up in the river and cooling off before the long ride back to San Fran.
The next day we packed our bags and set off for the Airport to take the short hop to Las Vegas!
