I have reasons to suspect that Mat and I are either turning into bumpkins, have shifted our mindsets to that of retired folk or have been in New Zealand a few weeks too many, the evidence:
1. If you were to look at out 30 before 30 lists you would find that one of us wants to have our own herb garden while the other would ideally acquire a new "best" dress, yes, the exact wording used!
2. We frequently lament our lack of practical waterproof layers.
3. Yesterday, we donned our impractial clothing and went to a hide to penguin spot. Yes, with bird watchers. It was wonderful, but we left feeling abashed for allowing an old dear to share her binoculars with us, as, being the only people at least 3 decades younger than herself, she probably forgot our eyesight was considerably superior to her own and would never have offered out her precious piece of kit if she'd realised.
4. Things we miss about Britain include teacakes and a "good" cuppa.
5. Things that make us not want to return to Britain include the passing of the NHS reforms that will decimate the best thing Britain has going for it. Oh, and the slimy toad in charge.
6. We have been pulling into backwater places for the sole reason of poking around in second hand book shops and started commenting on how handsome leather binding really is. (Yes, Mat has finally tracked down the whole LOTR trilogy)
7. We are regularly in bed by 9pm as our van has no light!
8. We pay attention to how far exactly a tank of petrol takes us (turns out beloved Mabel is a greedy, fat bit*h)
9. On hearing a man yodelling from the bog I found it to be quaint, and smiled, rather than thinking him weird and making a sarcastic remark.
10. We have both completed a Bill Bryson novel.
11. We have started saying things like, "but the book was better" after seeing films. (Take note, 'We Need to Talk About Kevin' and 'The Hunger Games'!)
12. We drove passed two signs for 'Sheep Technology College' (I kid you not) and 'Ladbrookes School' and couldn't help but say, "what is the world coming to?" (Ladbrookes school? An example of an academy no doubt!)
