This is Romeo. He is seven years old and has quite an interesting backstory. He was originally someone’s house pet, but luckily the owners knew what to feed Romeo and how to keep him healthy, so he was in perfect condition when he came to CCF. He came to CCF though when it became illegal to keep cheetahs as pets, but the owners were willing to let us take care of him. Because he is so oriented and comfortable with people, unfortunately, he cannot be released back into the wild. Now, because he was living in a house for so long, he is also unable to live comfortably with other male cheetahs, so he rooms with four female cheetahs. Although Romeo’s story had a happy ending, there are many cheetahs who are taken from the wild or bred illegally and sold as pets. The illegal pet trade is real, and you can help by simply reporting websites or people you know are a part of it to CITES or organizations, such as CCF, who can either immediately help or redirect you. If this makes you uncomfortable, you can report profiles on Facebook or Instagram, and they will be removed.
