I had been looking forward to my Cape Tribulation Trip since I booked it in Sydney back in December...that feels about a million years ago now! It was an early start from the hostel and the weather was looking a bit dodge so I didnt hold much hope that I was going to see it in all it's glory.
Cape Tribulation is a few hours north of Cairns and it's where the sea meets a rainforest, utterly weird but interesting. The bus is my favourite place for picking up people (as you can probably tell from my other blogs) so i was pleased that this trip was no exception. I met the most fun people on the trip including a group of germans, english couple and a nutty english girl. The first stop on our journey was at Port Douglas, a very nice area with a large amount of wealthy people. We only stopped there for a quick coffee and a few photos and then we were on our to Mossman Gorge. Our bus driver didnt stop talking and throughout the day he got more and more on our nerves. We had a bit of a walk to Mossman Gorge and it was lovely and it was so lucky that the sun came out and it was a beautiful day! Yippeeeee! I took around 4 million photos before heading back to the bus. The next stop was lunch...the place that they stop at is the oddest, backward and damn right minging place but the cheese toastie and bundy ginger beer made up for it. By this time the weather had clouded over and it was a bit rainy but it didnt matter as the people that I was with were fab. After lunch it was the Daintree River Cruise which is where you go looking for wild Croc's, snakes and other wildlife. We were so lucky as we saw the biggest croc and a few snakes etc. That lasted an hour and then we had to continue up to Cape Tribulation itself. On the journey the bus driver nearly killed us all by swerving to miss a gigantic python on the road. Nice. The journey felt like forever as the guide didnt know how to shut up and he was about as interesting as a roasted parsnip. We ended up sitting at the back of the bus like naughty little school children taking the mickey out of him. After stopping for some weird ice cream that was made out of tropical fruit but tasted like coffee and chocolate (i kid you not it was amazing) we ended up in Cape Trib. We lost the mad english couple and a few others as some where on the day trip and I was staying over night.
When we arrived at Cape Trib Beach House it became apparent that this was not going to be a luxurious hostel. Ah well nevermind Kate and I thought. As we went to let ourselves into our room which was a little wooden hut we were greeted by 2 naked people...well, you can imagine what was happening. Staring open mouthed in shock Kate and I probably stared for a second too long and quickly closed the door and began to giggle. A few moments later the two people in question came out of the room looking a little flushed and apologised. ha ha classic! After that little giggle, Kate and I decided to check out the bar/restaurant which was about a 5 minute walk from our hut. As we were in the middle of the rainforest we were scared that some nasty animal was going to come and eat us...well..... we both turned around the same time to see a wild boar chasing after us, running like the wind back to the hut was hilarious. Trying to run in flip flops in the pouring rain whilst being chased by a grunting noisy wild boar was not the most relaxing experience I have had whilst travelling but it was hilarious.
That night all the people from the bus decided to meet up in the evening for dinner etc. The weather that night was terrible, monsoon rain was lashing down but it didnt dampen our spirits. The German group were so funny and there was also a little italian bloke called Antonio who was so funny but didnt realise he was. Anya and Ante were two of the German girls and they were fab. They spoke perfect english and we spent the whole night taken the pee out of eachother. After a funny night we all retired to bed. I was a bit scared as who knows what's in the rainforest and there was also a gecko (sorry wrong spelling but I cant be arsed to find out how to spell it) in my room above my bed. Lovely! They are cute but dont fancy swallowing one in my sleep!
The next day the weather was gorgeous a big group of us went for a walk along the beach and managed to lose the annoying dutch girl that had clung onto us like a leech. She was odd, you know when you get those people that are just so weird they should've have been put down at birth?! Well, she was certainly one of those. We had a nice time but I was scared that a croc was going to come and eat me, afterall anything seems to be possible in Australia.
In the afternoon the bus picked us up at 4. The rain was lashing down by this time and had been since around 1pm. This was not good news as loads of people had been stuck in Cape Trib the previous week. We were all hoping and praying that we wouldnt as they is nothing to do and nowhere to go there! There were 2 creeks that we had to cross in the bus and you guessed it...the rain had increased the depth of the creek from 0.2 metres to 1 metre. The highest water that the bus can go through is 0.4. We were all so tired and ready to go back to Cairns and the last thing we wanted was to stay in the flippin rainforest for another night. The driver said that no matter what we would be getting back tonight. It turned out that it was high tide and if we waited until low tide we should get out of there in a few hours. A few hours went by and we didnt end up passing the creeks until gone 8pm, we had been sitting in a smelly bus for 4 hours doing! Grr! On the way back I was DYING for a wee and I mean I was going to wet myself, the driver pulled over at some toilets that were in the pitch black (as by this time it was pretty late) as the bus headlights shone on the grass I could see all these little eyes.....there were a ge-zillions frogs all on the grass that we had to cross. My gut reaction was to jump on Kates back and scream, very elegant eh? We managed to pee in the dark using kates tiny torch for guidance. I thought knowing my luck a hug bloody spider would come out and bite me and I would die on the journey home. It didnt and I am still alive. I got back to Cairns really late and Em and Bev had called me cos they were all worried about me! Bless 'em!
Cape Tribulation was a lot of fun as I had the best group. The scenery was amazing and it lived up to my expectations.
