Hello!
We were en route to Sydney last time I emailed. We arrived in Sydney and decided to stay at base. That night we took part in their trivia quiz which we didn't do very well at. Who knows when Elvis died (we guessed at 72) or what Madrid's airport is called (we flew to Malaga!)
The next day Emily from Topdeck met us and we saw the sights of Sydney notably the opera house and harbour bridge.
Day after that we took the train to Katoomba to the Blue Mountains and saw the three sisters (famous rocks).
Next day we took the train to Bondi junction and met Emily in her cafe before me and Emilie walked the 6k from Bondi beach to Coogee beach. It was beautiful and we saw some lovely beaches.
The next morning we took the ferry from circular quay by the opera house to Manly where we did the 10k walk to Spit bridge.
The day after that we went to Strathfield for a cup of tea with yiayia's brother, Michael. He was so chuffed to see us and I showed him photos of the family that I had on my phone. Made his day. He also insisted on calling yiayia and wouldn't listen when I said it was 4am in England haha! I think yiayia appreciated it though which was nice. We headed back into Sydney after and walked around some markets.
Next day we headed to a suburb of Sydney called Darlington and looked for a sign but to no avail. We went into a shop to buy a drink and there was a meal on the board called "kyri feast". I spoke to the guys who were Greek and they said the people in the shop next door were from athienou in Cyprus! That's next door to lympia! I walked in and started talking in Greek and they tried to work out if they knew me haha! I spoke to them for 20 minutes and they were chuffed and said they'd never have believed I was English such is my level of Greek. Chuffed! I'm sure mum will be proud :-) They treated us to home made rice pudding and said it will be better that my mums and I said "I don't think so!" Was really nice. Headed back into town and me and emilie went up Sydney tower for free to the rotating bar! Free so long as you are dressed smartly. The bar rotates 360 degrees in 1h30 and we bought a couple of drinks, sat down and watched the world spin round. We went back to the bar for a few drinks.
The last day in Sydney we went back to Coogee and met Emilie's friend Kelly for lunch. That night Emily joined us for the trivia and the 3rd round we "won". We only got 5/10 but the guy said "f*ck your mum" to Emily at one point and she was upset so we reckon he pretended we won. Not complaining as winners of each round got a drink each! He said we got 8/10. Bulls***! Tarek (French guy from Maggie/Airlie Beach) came for a drink too so was nice to see him! We got about 4 hours sleep and got up to catch the 9:25 plane to Auckland.
We arrived in Auckland 20 minutes early and waited for Kyri and Elaine who were 45 mins late! Was so nice to finally see Kyri again after over a year!
The next day the four of us went for a walk around Auckland and at night went to the cinema to see horrible bosses which was hilarious!
On the 5th Emilie and I went on a free tour of Auckland which included a walk under Auckland harbour bridge.
6th me and Emilie went to Eden park to watch the All Blacks beat the Wallabies 30-14. Was amazing to go to a rugby game of such importance. Shame we're not around for the rugby world cup! We got face paints and flags and soaked up the atmosphere! Bring on the world cup. My money's on New Zealand!
This morning we got up and checked out and moved round the corner to another hostel which is where we are now. Going to have a quiet day and later going to go up Auckland sky tower. 2moro we bid farewell to Kyri and Elaine and begin our kiwi experience adventure around the country ending in christchurch on the 30th, flying to Melbourne then 31st fly back to England arriving on the 1st. I'll keep you posted.
Much love.
Gonna go as Kyri has just offered me a cup of tea and I can't refuse!
