For the second day in a row we caught an early train out of Zurich, this time heading to the lovely city of Luzern. We spent the day exploring the old part of this picturesque fairy tale city (full of castles, princess turrets and fairy tale painted facades), starting with wandering through the Tuesday morning market. We then explored the Jesuit Church (the oldest Baroque building in Switzerland) before heading over the Spreuer Bridge (one of the city's covered bridges) and climbing Museggmauer (the city's medival walls). After taking in the sites of the city from its highest point, we stopped for lunch, literally eating in the middle of the street (Robyn was a little worried I was going to be hit by a car). I figured I should sample the local dishes, so I had a veal bratswurst. Although it was a decent meal, I definitely preferred yesterday's cheese fondue. Having had our fix and filed our bellies we set out to find Lowendenkmal, "The dying Lion of Luzern". This famous monument, which was carved into the natural rock in memory of the heroic death of the Swiss mercenaries at the Tuileries in 1792 (the French Revolution), has been described by Mark Twain as "the saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world". We spent the majority of the rest of the afternoon walking through Old Town, where we stumbled across Weinmarkt; we were expecting to see a fountain flowing with wine. Sadly we were disappointed.
Having seen the major Luzern tourist attractions, we set out doing what we did best: shopping and looking for chocolates. Thanks to Teree's terrific memory, she was able to lead us to an amazing Swiss watch store and the best Swiss chocolates we have ever had. Tired from our adventerous day we hopped on a train back to Zurich, where we met up with Celia and Jay for a fabulous pizza dinner and some wine (we are in Europe so wine must be had every night).
Today's quote of the day "Chocolate, the way chocolate should be".
Having finished our Swiss chocolates and another bottle of wine we are planning tomorrow's day trip to Liechtenstein (yes, that's a whole other country)...
