I can't believe it's been so long since my last blog.. not intentional i promise!Mr German has termed me the 'internet junkie'.Apartently I am a realible source as to where to find the closest one to our accomdation as it is normally one of the first things i check out!
Honduras has come and gone and not even got a mention. We've had two serious travel days the last two days and arrived finally in Granada last night so glad to get off a bus.. two days of 8 hour bus rides! The internet in Hondurus was scarce and painfully slow.. Patience is a virtue i don't seem to have acquired when it comes to the internet!
Anyway alittle abbreviated version of our week in Hondurus. We crossed over the border on Saturday morning saying goodbye to Antigua and Guatemala. The border is always an interesting scene. The minute the doors of our bus open we are surrounded by vast amounts of swarming shaddy looking guys with wads of cash offering to change our money!Hondurus seemed immediately more lush with lots of shades of green becoming much more the norm throughout the landscape. We spent two nights in Coban, a special site of more Mayan ruins. After our tour on sunday morning It was the first time that it felt that things were starting to sound all too familiar!Enough ruins for the moment. For the afternoon Jeff joined me to take a stroll up a ecological park above the town. I was keen to see the coffee plantation but this was alot more insignificant in comparsion to the vasty array of birds we were greeted by. I think the photo captures it best my complete terror when holding one of them me. It took abit of convincing and it was brief! Jeff seemed completely thrilled having one of the lick his neck while I screeched in terror at the first touch. The discovry channel were there filming.
Monday we had our first dodgy bus experience. We have been lucky up to now by all accounts. Expectations shifted immediately when we arrived at the bus terminal at 7.30 and saw what we were travelling in for the day. Half an hour down the road..the driver was under the bus trying to jack it up and check what appeared to be a problem with the brakes.. in true style the men around us seemed to be fascinated with the challenge of figuring out what was wrong gathering outside, offering advice and comparing theories! Appartently some stuff newspaper around the wheels seemed to secure things to get us to the next city two hours later hot and sweaty to change buses! We got to Tela at 6 3 hours late, missing our excursion. Tensions were high..keys for our rooms were given out quickly and we had some' free time'. It was needed!
Calm restored tuesday morning at the fine hour of 5.30 we left for the ferry port to catch a ferry over to Roatan, one of three islands off the coast in the carribean sea. It was so nice to be back in real holiday mode again , bikini's on and the lapping carribean waters awaited. Wednesday was Jo's birthday,my room mate for the past few weeks. We strolled over to the another beach alittle further away in an attempt to do some excercise. It's a bit of challenge keeping some elements of normality when you are constantly eating out and on the move. I got so excited about having a fridge in our room that i bought some milk and yogurt and we had breakfast in bed on Wednesday morning. Jo came back from the internet and burst out laughing when she saw me sitting with a cup, a box of special K on one side of me and yogurt on the other watching Oprah.. a complete drop out from society!! Wednesday evening celebrations went on in a bar near our hotel. Kirsty, our guide who is always up for anything relished the opportunity to engage in ' Open Mic' night and dedicated 'Stand by me' to her beloved tour group!
Thursday the weather wasn't so kind to us. Appartently the rainy season lasts until mid Jan but after a stroll around some of the art gallerys in between showers, Jo and I stoppped at a really cute bar on the way back to our hotel for wraps and just chilled. Everything is so calm and slow on Roatan that after a while it rubs off on you. Afternoon naps were had by all, bit of diary writting and looking up spanish words in the dictionary.
Our group has grown again as we picked up an Irish couple on friday evening so we are now 18. Things are getting too big for group meals and after a good few weeks together little groups are defined and things have settled into a familiar rhythm.
Out hotel here is seriously lovely, really posh by our tour standard! After two days on buses what joy and smiles it brought last night as we arrived. Grandad is famous for it's handmade ornate rocking chairs. Our terrace overlooking the main square has lots so it was lovely last night to sit, swing and watch the world go by.
