Hello from the land down under... a much needed blog update is here. I realise it's been a long time, but I've been having too much fun to find the time, and very little internet access to actually update you all.
Last time i updated was surfer's paradise, and since then i have been too.... Brisbane, Noosa, Rainbow Beach, Hervey Bay, Frasier Island, 1770, Krombit and now I'm in Airlie Beach. It's hard to believe that i only have a few more stops and ill have done the whole of the east coast.
After leaving Surfers Paradise i was glad to welcome the chilled city like atmosphere that was in Brisbane, don't get me wrong i loved surfers, i just felt we spent a little too much time there, too the point where we were struggling to find things to do other than sit around the pool. I actually really liked Brisbane, we were told that if you were to actually settle down there for a bit you would love the place, but if you were passing through for a couple days like we were you would hate it as there is little to do. The atmosphere was very different to Sydney, which i think we all liked, the city centre is like a busy town, not over crowded, and you didn't have the sense of urgency that you did when in Sydney which was nice. But as mentioned earlier, there is nothing to do in Brisbane so we didn't do a lot, which was good as we were only there for a couple of days, which consisted of sitting round the pool, having a walk into the city and spending our evenings at the hostel bar... yes, ive spent so much time with the guys now that i will quite happily go to the bar and order a jug... yes, thats right... a jug of beer (maybe two)and drink it all to myself. I have a strange feeling this will make my dad a little proud hehe. (Not feeling the whisky yet though dad!). Brisbane was also our catch up with the girls again, so nice to see them and actually spend time with them and have a natter. One other thing that i would like to note, is that i may have got a little (ok maybe very) excited about the fact that there is a HMV there... i now know what I'll be doing if i can't find a job further up the east coast.
After Brisbane we headed to Noosa, to what was one of the most dingy hostels we have been to so far. Again we were only there for a couple days so it was bearable. While in Noosa we went to the famous Australia Zoo, the whole place seems to be a shrine to Steve Irwin, with his pictures and famous quotations plastered on every wall. The zoo was great, the only thing that i was really disappointed at was the croc show, it just had something missing and only lasted for 20mins. It didn't take us long to figure that the only thing missing, was the person that gave the zoo its spark in the first place and that was Steve Irwin, he was known for doing the croc shows on a regular basis and making them a spectacle to watch. Its nice to see that his legacy will live on through his wife and children. His daughter has a TV show over here in Aus, where she is clearly following in his footsteps and whenever she uses a clip featuring Steve she proudly says MY DAD... it was really nice to hear. His son made a cameo on one of big screens at the croc show, we all commented on how he is the double of Steve and that we all believe in a few years when he is old enough, he will be wrestling crocs as well. Overall it was a great day! The next day we had an early start, and we headed to rainbow beach.
When on the bus into rainbow beach our bus driver proceeded to tell us that it was a very happening little town, with lots going on and that he would give us a tour when we got there. So to start he showed us where our hostels were, there is only 3 hostels in Rainbow and they are all next to each other... and then he went on to show us the very happening little town, telling us to pay attention because there was so much going on, that if we didn't listen we might miss something... well he wasn't lying. The tour started... "Over here we have the chemist, a few clothes shops, a nice little cafe, a bottle shop, another little cafe... and that is the town of rainbow beach people, don't get lost"... there was nothing there!!! You could literally walk the entire town (more like a street) in 5mins and that's when you're strolling. To top that we didn't have a phone signal either... you really do feel like one of your limbs have fallen off when your mobile doesn't work... how on earth will i keep in contact with people... pen/paper, internet or even the height of modern technology, picking up a pay phone and actually phoning someone using that.... all that requires effort though, and 50c if you want to use the pay phone hehe. Despite all of the above, the place was really nice, our hostel was like a 5* hotel compared to the one we had before and a few good nights were had... i will no longer be drinking goon with lemonade, that stuff is the devil!! (Apparently I'm funny when I'm drunk, hmmm).
Then we headed to Hervey Bay, our one stop before we headed to Fraser. Again, the hostel was very nice, $8 jugs of beer... another good night was had. We had roll call the next morning at 7am (sharp) where we were briefed on our trip to Fraser and then we were divided into drivers and non drivers, there was 9 of us all together, 5 were designated drivers and the 4 left over were split into two... one group went for our food supplies over the next few days and the other went for our booze supplies. I was food shopping, we decided that we would just BBQ it up for the next few days, so meats and salads it was with various snacks... we had $180 to burn, we would have enough surely... we spent $188 and forgot the bacon, there went our breakfast! Then when we got back we had to pack the 4 wheel drive and off we went....
Everything we did at Fraser Island, The Whitsundays and everything in between will be in my next blog... so you will just have to hang onto the edge of your seat and wait for that one!!
Some new photos will be added to the photo section soon, so keep an eye out over the next few days!
Check in soon!! xx
