After the heartache of last year, this year was my turn to go to Wimbledon; funnily enough on the same day as my parents went last year. As I was packing for a week at home I was thinking (as usual) about what to wear: shorts? wedges? dress? As it turned out I went for a very practical long sleeved top, jeans, converse, scarf and a massive mac. Not quite the stylish effect I'd hoped to have but at least I was warm-ish and dry.
After the faint-inducing price of the rail tickets because we went during rush hour, we arrived at a dry and busy Wimbledon. We watched God knows who on a practice court and then had a wander round the ground. I never realised just how close the outdoor courts were to each other; if you stood up in one you could see into about 3 others. We then found our seats about halfway up and settled down to watch what would become a familiar scene of the court being prepared for play. At about 11h00 Murray and Cilic came out to raucous applause and started their warm up as the clouds grew darker. Literally as they started playing it started to rain, and they only managed 2 games before the umpire sent them back to the locker room. About an hour later they were back for the same routine; this time they lasted 20 minutes before it started raining, but they just put the umbrellas up and soon we were able to finish the match.
While we waited for the women's quarter final to start we went to have lunch. Everything smelt amazing but we settled for the tried and tested noodles; obviously eaten on a sheltered bench while it rained. AGAIN. We then went back to watch Radwanska vs Kirilenko, thankfully without the bird-calling screams of Azarenka who was on centre. Then just before 19h the rain came again and play was suspended for the day, so we made our weary way back home with the rest of the spectators.
Third time lucky next year. No rain please.
