This evening we gave our passports another workout.
We headed off to Novi Sad in Serbia. Dragan 4 (a good friend of Cvita's son Dragan) was our guide. Novi Sad is a huge city with a population of about 350,000.
On one side of the Dunav is a massive fortress with a huge wall that was built by the Turks back in the 1600s. Overlooking the Dunav is an equally impressive Austro-Hungarian castle and its buildings (now a museum, hotel & cultural space for the creative people of the city). We actually drove up into the fortress over the 'gangway', across the cobblestones & parked & spent the next 2 hours walking around, taking in the views as well as looking out over the tiny old town of Novi Sad which is now almost fully occupied by university students who can afford to live there as the government has provided this accommodation by reducing the rent.
There are still reminders of the buildings and structures that were bombed by NATO in response to the ethnic cleansing of the Kosovo's in 1999. The bridges were also bombed with one still being rebuilt today.
Before heading off we drove across one of the rebuilt bridges to view the fortress from the other side of the Dunav. The fortress was even more impressive when viewed from this side of the Dunav. Here we found a tall monument resembling a family that was built to commemorate those who were thrown to their deaths by the Hungarians at the end of WWII.
The evening was perfectly topped off with a mixed grill dinner & drinks at Bačka Palanka before heading home.
