Puerto Varas is a small, quiet town on the shore of Lake Llanquihue in Chile's Lake District. It has many wooden shingled houses, some painted in bright colours (bizarre German influence again) and there was a big new hotel/casino in the middle of town that looked quite out of place among them!
I walked around the lakefront and stopped in a little cafe for hot chocolate. Back at the hotel, I had a girly afternoon with Jeanne-Marie and Karien, watching 27 Dresses.
In the evening a few of us went to La Olla restaurant. I was a very long walk from the middle of town - stupidly we ignored several people that told us we should get a taxi, massively underestimating the distance! But it was worth it - amaaaazing seafood, it was so good and so nice to have a change from steak!
The following day we took a trip to Chiloé Island (separate blog entry) and the day after I visited Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón, an unusual and pretty church with red-peaked roofs. In front of the church is a little park with a shrine to the Virgin Mary.
Before leaving town I had to sample the local specialty - Kuchen, a German dessert pie, yummy!
