Paraty is a small colonial town on the coast of Brazil, about halfway between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. It is quite cute with its cobble-stoned streets and old-fashioned buildings. There was a real buzz about it at night time - the streets were packed with people and there was music coming from every doorway, shops open late, market stalls and entertainers (there was one guy who seemed to be dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow, just standing around on the street corner!).
We went to a fabulous restaurant, Thai Brasil, which had crazy decor - palm trees and Christmas tree baubles everywhere and every table painted with different patterns. They served great Thai food and lethal caipirinhas. Later we went to the Che bar (Che Guevara themed) for more caipirinhas and I ended up cartwheeling home over the cobble stones!
The next day was a pretty lazy one. I strolled around town a bit - I saw the old churches, the boats in the harbour, souvenir shops, artists painting traditional scenes in the back streets and horses pulling rubbish carts. I visited the Casa da Cultura museum which had photos and stories from some of the current residents about their lives and their backgrounds.
In the evening a few of us went to the swanky Margarida restaurant for dinner with live music.
