Road trip to Myrtle Beach with Cheryl's folks. VERY FUN!
Day 1: Saturday, May 17 - We rented a Chrysler Town & Country Van at Detroit Metro Airport, ditched our vehicle at nearby Steve and Kerry's house. We picked up Arnie and Jan Fields from their home in Novi, MI and headed South. Good travel day, clear and dry, lunch in Ohio, and after 8 hrs. on the road, we stayed the night at a lovely hotel in West Virginia.
Day 2: Sunday, May 18 - Cheryl's 55th Bday (Happy birthday Cheryl-Ann!). We completed the remaining 6 hrs. of the journey and arrived at the Bluegreen Harbour Lights Resort in Myrtle Beach. Accomodations included a screened-in balconoy overlooking the Intercoastal Waterway, tributary to the Waccamaw River. Beautiful view at night-time.
Day 3: Monday, May 19 - Brought us all down to the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, a cocktail with an ocean view, a little shopping and lunch. Cheryl and Chuck took a ride on the Myrtle Beach Skywheel, a ferris wheel that stands about 15 stories tall (enclosed seats!) and a magnificent view of the entire stretch of Myrtle Beach. Grocery shopping for the week and a nice, home cooked meal at the resort.
Day 4: Tuesday, May 20 - We 4 visited Brookgreen Gardens, an outdoor art museum, garden, zoo, and historical site. Built on a rehabilitated trio of mid-1800's rice plantations, the tour included a walking garden with a variety of sculptures and constructed pieces.
We also enjoyed a pontoon boat tour of the rice growing areas at the convergence of the Great Pee Dee, the Little Pee Dee, and the Waccamaw rivers as they empty into the Atlantic Ocean. Pretty fascinating technology that was used back then to flood the rice paddies, using a gate system in coordination with the rise/fall of the ocean tides.
Day 5: Wednesday, May 21 - We checked out of Harbour Lights Resort and moved down to the beach to the Carolina Grande Resort, on the main drag about 200 yards from the seashore. Our 12th floor suite had a marveous view of the ocean in two directions. Only steps to the ocean.
After getting all settled in, C&C stepped out for 45 minutes to secretly pickup a surprise visitor (to Arnie and Jan) - Deb Fields, who flew in to Myrtle Beach Airport. We stealthily delivered her to the Carolina Grande much to the delight of Dad & Jan. We 3 spent time on the beach that day swimming, sunning, pool, lazy river, ocean and relaxing, with dinner back at the resort. Game night later (left, right, center).
Day 6: Thursday, May 22 - We all slept in, back to the boardwalk for shopping. More pool, hot tub, ocean, sea shells, drinks and games at night (left, right, center & uno).
Day 7: Friday, May 23 - We loaded up the van and headed for home. Stopping at Cracker Barrel. Another clear day for ridin' and spent Friday night in Kentucky at a hotel.
Day 8: Saturday, May 24 - Back to Michigan by early evening where we returned rental car, picked up Deb's car at the airport parking and enjoyed a wonderful BBQ at Steve and Kerry's. Deb drove the folks home back to Novi!
