I am surprised at how much I am enjoying being back in a big city again. I know people always talk about the traffic in Vietnam well, I believe that India may have at last met its match. Whereas in India it is terrifying and the cars all nearly hit each other all the time, here there are just loads and loads and loads of motorbikes. I think the most amazing thing to do here is cross the roads, I just love it. You just walk out and everything moves around you, one day we walked around a roundabout with maybe 500 bikes, what an experience, it is something everyone should get the chance to experience.
When we arrive we meet up again with Kim and Nina, it's been great catching up with them in various places along the way down. The next day me and Marianne explore the city, there really are some beautiful parts to this city. In the afternoon we decide to have some pampering and head to the Blind Institute for a massage. Well, it was another bizarre moment for the collection, I'm pretty sure I just spent an hour being pinched, prodded, thumped and rubbed. Relaxing is not a word I would describe the experience but afterwards I felt good and a little sleepy so couldn't have been to bad. To continue with the theme we went for a manicure and then in the evening I headed off with Kim to see Les Mis at the cinema.
While in Ho Chi Minh I also visited the War Remnants Museum; formally known of the American Atrocities Museum. So unsurprisingly it is very bias against the Americans and what they did during the war. The museum is full of horrific pictures from the treatment of the Vietnamese prisoners to the victims of Agent Orange. The museum is not all that informative like a western museum but it really does make you think about what happened and what people did. All together a very thought provoking experience.
It is quite sad as the day before I leave it is time to part ways from Marianne who I have been travelling with for about 2 weeks now. She was a great travel companion and hopefully we will catch up again somewhere further along the way. On our last night togehter we head for dinner with our 2 new French friends Emilie and Bertrand.
For the 3rd time in Vietnam, and I think the last time for a while, I see Sarah before she flies off to the Philippines. We go for yet another massage and I take the risk of getting my hair cut and although the hair cut was fine it did turn out to be in a brothel. One good thing about it was when you have your hair washed you lay down on a bed with you head on a cushion in the sink and you get a really good head massage with your wash, defiantly something that should be brought to the UK. For the evening we go to a rooftop restaurant where you can see all the lights from the city, lovely.
