15th - 23 AugustWe haven't quite had the access to wifi that we thought, and refused to pay the $13 in the Vegas hotels that we ended up in due to the heat of 105'c in the Arizona dessert. Lots of fun in Vegas at the pool, at MGM hotel where there is literally a lions den with 3 lion cubs in a glass cage, acrobatics at Circus Circus. Over the jet lag by day three, Edward was waking at 3am - having a little chat with me and then thankfully going back to sleep after saying "I JUST LOVE YOU MUM" - Oh what a mummies boy.We finally arrived at the Grand Canyon National Park on Wednesday 20 (Edwards Birthday - I have been training him with his new age for the last 2 weeks!) We could put up the tent and settle in (a bit). The campsite was marked as full - but apparently they just don't take this sign down, and you take your chances if you turn up. We did turn up - an hour earlier than we realised due to the change in time that we weren't aware of. So the tent went up - along with the chairs, the hammock, the beds, etc etc. We really have too much stuff and I'm looking forward to ditching some of it when we meet SB in Jackson. As we hadn't done much planning apart from buying the ticket we run the risk of not doing exactly what most people would do, but also have the benefit of taking opportunities as they come up. The original plan (ish) had been to stay at Lake Mead and drive to South Rim. As it turned out the North rim was quieter, cooler and the camping was right on the rim of the canyon. The down side was that we had to move pitch for the second night - bit of a faff, but better than moving on.The girls have been sworn in as Junior Park Rangers - a programme run at all the national parks involving doing a work book related to the area. No 1 has been desperate to do school work since we arrived and is in her element doing the booklets. So long as it is animal related No 2 is happy as Larry. We amazed at how much animal life we have seen, a snake, humming birds, condors, lizards, huge gliding butterflies, mule deer, mountain goats, buffalo, chipmonks, racoons, squirels, wasps (one got a bit too close & stung me)Disappointed to move on fro the Grand Canyon but on the advice of a more senior park ranger headed for Zion NP. With a few more provisions on board thought that we would stop one night and when we passed a bunch of Tippees on the roadside thought that was the perfect solution for one night. (Too much effort to put up the tent for one night. So with our mats, fleece sleeping bags, and Indian rugs we were fixed to spend the night under a different type of cover. It turned out that Zion is a much more accessible canyon with more to do and we have ended up pitching our tent in the campground at the bottom of the canyon for 2 nights anyway.
