charlie's 5 months of fun
The entry takes me from brisbane to byron bay! we had 4 great days in brisbane. Its a really nice city - quite big but very pretty with the river running through it. The days were spent walking around the shops, sunbathing in the Botanical Gardens, meeting my sister's friend Mima for lunch and four people from our tours in Asia. We ended up moving hostel after the first two nights to move to the hostel where the 3 from our first hostel were staying - which made it so much easier planning what we wanted to do each day and more fun when getting ready to go out because we were all in the same room.....now going out...we went out 3 out of the 4 nights we were there to actually the same bar/club each time!! mainly cos it was underneath our hostel but also because it was a really good place- good music, cheesy atmosphere- the kind of the thing i love!!! One of the nights i managed to meet up with one of friends from my ski season which was great especially seeing as i didnt think id ever see him again when we said goodbye in france! We had a good few days in brisbane with all the meets and greets and drinking and then carly and i said goodbye to imogen as she goes back to asia and headed on our merry way as a twosome once again!
Next stop was surfers paradise! sort of like a minature ibiza with all the nightclubs and bars but far smaller and not quite as tacky!! We had 3 nights there - 2 of which we went out with people from our hostel. The first night we managed to sleep from 5pm when we arrived at the hostel until 10am the next day - we obviously needed it! and then the following night, the hostel organised a night out with free drinks and entry into club etc! The days were spent sunbathing on the beach - the busiest weve been on so far and going to an outlet store where we could buy good surfer clothes at a tiny price!
Next stop byron bay! really pretty seaside town full of hippies!! We stayed in a hostel called The Art Factory which is very hippy orientated - you can do yoga and marshall arts. Learn how to survive in the bush by drinking water from trees, go to the art gallery or just chill by the pool and jacuzzi! On our first day, we got up at 5am!!! to see the sunrise over byron cape which is the most easterly point of australia which was incredible! And on the second day we went dophin kayaking! this was an amazin experience - we were in pairs in giant sea kayaks and had a quick briefing at the beginning before setting off from the beach onto the open sea! I was at the back steering and was told that i needed to keep the kayak straight when going over the waves otherwise wed topple in - this scared me a bit - all that responsibility!!! but as it turned out, the largest waves were right at the beginnning and weren't particularly scary and from then onwards it was totally calm because there was no wind. This was great because it meant we could go out really far to a point where they only go a few times a year because its so rough and also meant we could just sit and bob on the sea and watch for animals. We were really lucky and were able to see a sea turtle on the surface, dolpins came swimming around us and underneath our kayaks - some were mating which was definiately an interesting sight to see!! The most incredible thing for me though was seeing whales - we've seen then off fraser island and cape byron but this time we could get really close infact at one point one was about 20 feet away - so close you could see all its markings - its was huge!!!!!!
The evenings in byron were spend going out to a talent show at the hostel - lots of people getting up to tell jokes, play guitar and sing. This was good fun especially when all the electricity in byron bay went off and they all had to do it accoustically!! The second day we went out into town with all our roommates to a place called cheeky monkeys where you are encouraged to dance on the tables as the makeshift dancefloor! and last night we went to the cinema in the hostel - cowprint chairs, loungers and teddies - and then went to see a fireshow with poi and firesticks!!
And today, we have one day left to laze around byron before getting on the overnight bus to sydney - 13 1/2 hours -its gonna be fun!!!!
