Sitting in a hotel room in the French Quarter of New Orleans I can truly say that I've had the most brilliant week! After my few days in Baltimore I travelled back up to New York to meet up with my group to tour from there to San Francisco. In the group there are 6 British, 5 German, 1 American and 1 Russian, and they're all such brilliant people. The next day we made our way to Philadelphia and were planning to spend a couple of hours there. But on the way there was an accident on the Jersey Turnpike and we ended up staying in traffic for 2-3 hours! To be honest though, this is part of the journey, and in the van next to us was a lovely woman from North Carolina called Sunshine. She told us all about her life and her daughter and her religion and it proper made my day, it was so refreshing to speak to someone completely different to me. We were in the car for about 7 hours before we got to Phili, when it should have taken 2, so all we got to do there was eat and see the Liberty Bell. Then we were back in the car to make our way to D.C. We got to the campground quite late so all we could do was set up the tents and make the dinner. It was nice being part of a team and to chip in with all the cooking and washing up etc., after being alone for a month it made a great change. It was boiling hot too so a comfortable night in the tent!!
The next day we spent the day in D.C, which could have been better seeing as I'd been bitten so badly on my feet that they'd swollen and were cutting into my shoes! However, I got to see the Capitol, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the White House and a lot more, so a successful day! The next day we stopped off at Arlington Cemetery where J.F.K is buried, followed by a long drive through Shenandoah Park, which was a beautiful drive looking over the mountains of Virginia. We stopped off at an apple shack on the side of the road and met a man named Andy who gave us all a free apple, and was so friendly asking where we were going and what we'd done so far. However that day was just a long old day of driving so me and some other girls decided to get a cabin for the night for 6 dollars more, so we could get a decent nights sleep,
The next day we drove to Nashville, TN and so were officially in the Deep South! The campsite we stayed at was called Jellystone and was Yogi Bear themed. We decided to upgrade to a cabin again and it was really nice - kitchen, T.V and bathroom! We met a guy called Chad who took us around the campsite on his buggy, and then we went out to a saloon bar and did some line dancing, then to a Coyote Ugly bar when we danced on the bar, so was a really fun night! Next stop was Memphis, where we visited Graceland and Sun Studios which were absolutely amazing. I'd never seen a place that still had so much character was ambience. Afterwards we went to Beale St where I got to sing Sweet Home Alabama with a Blues Band, had a meal with pulled pork and listened to Blues music - it was the best day yet!!
Yesterday we got to New Orleans and went out on the famous Bourbon St, went to strip clubs and bullriding bars and kareoke, and had a brilliant night! Today we had a full day in NO so I decided to spend the day alone and really relax, explore the French Quarter etc. I'm so excited for the next part of the trip, but I can't believe we're already a third of the way through....
