Well as travelling across the country goes this one was the most memorable mainly because it took 6 different modes of transport to get me to my final destination! One of them being on the back of a scotter at 4am in the morning driven by what seemed to be a 14 year old who i was sure had only just passed his test by the way he corned at speed! Thank god there was no traffic on the road! But I got there eventurally!!
Georgetown was a bit grimy but the hostel was entertaining as it had it's very own live band fronted by a Malay cowboy dressed with stetson hat and matching boots belting out loveballards til 2am. Being in the dorm which was directly above this, the acoustics did nothing for the warbling that filtered up through my bed and bones - sleep that night was like being in the score for titanic!
Up early from my eventful night's sleep, I managed to pick up a sweedish couple to go to the snake temple with. As it turns out the temple is full of live snakes - funny that huh!:-)) It was all going swimmingly that was until they made me touch a python, then the next thing i knew I was standing in front of a camera with 3 snakes draped over me with a petrified look on my face! All the guy said was - 'juuust relaax'..... and how am i supposed to do that mister, with 3 snakes curling on me which I swear truned round to look and smuggly grin at me!!? From there I was like fearless lady ... stepping into a cage with a 10ft long python and stroking it like a pet (weird as it's actually a snake not a cat!) and then out of nowhere a monkey bitt (gave a lovebite really) my sweedish friend so this cut short our stay which was good timing as the guy proceeded to kiss the most deadliest snake they had - one step too far for me!
Going through the same bus terminal each time, like deja vu but a lot less scenic as the back of buses usually are, we then ventured up to the Kek Lok Si temple which was a bit of a trek through alleyways of stalls, with people hounding you and thrusting smiling buddha statues in your hand the whole time. When we did get to the top the views were awesome and the explosive colours so vibrant but the thought of buses and stalls were ever present in our minds. So the botanical gardens and greenery that followed was a much needed escape getting me prepared for the Cameron Highlands the next day.
My stay was short and brief here but I managed to cover a lot of ground, meet some random people like JJ who took me around Little India on the back of a motorcycle which was soo much fun but yet again the safety rules don't really apply to them here. But you only get to try these things once! I sure was glad for the a/c huge bus though the next day taking me to Highlands and tea plantations .... to the Hills my friend!
