Part III... Turtles!
#Before I mention the trutles I have to say to anyone going to Sandakan go to the WWII War memorial... it was amazing yet so shocking. Of the 2,000 POWs that were marched through the rainforests and into the jungles only 7 survived and that's because they escaped. Every now and then you need to go and see some things like this to realise how lucky you are to be able to swan about each country's so freely.
#Right, back to the turtles. The island was so idyllic and there was no problem waiting for the turtles in the evening to come up and lay their eggs. Whilst we busied oursleves with cards eventually the call came through and we all meandered down to the turtle excited about witnessing this prehistoric animal in action (though I thought it was a little invasive - i know i wouldn't like people watching me!but it's a turtle so it's ok I reasoned in the end)
#On our way there, not 20 yards into walking to the turtle, Kate and I deep in conversation did not notice this huge turtle hole.. so yes we were the only 2 to fall down it! Kate got out unscathed whilst I on the other hand lost a flip flop. At this point, still in the whole I had to start digging with my hands in the dark to find it. As people kept walking past with their torches not one came to my aid so on with the digging I went. Then some dumb American I could hear overhead shouted "Oh look, Brad, it's the turtle!!" .... ''No, I say, I'm just looking for my flip flop .. ''haha, it look's like you're laying eggs!'' says the American getting dumber by the second! When I become a 30yr old 20kg sea turtle laying 95 eggs then I'll let you know so you can take a photograph and I'll even sign it for you!
#Flip flop found, and baby turtles released. Some though I fear will have no hope as they don't even know that running away from the water is a very bad idea. But I didn't want to leave them there they were so cute. Hairy on the other hand I could've left on the island - not so cute or as it turns out very good at waking up! he was our comedy guy of the tour - PING!
#The Orangutang Rehabilitation Centre in Sepilok was very professional. We managed to get there in time for the feeding and saw yet again several Makacks doing their ''welcome dance' for us which was very kind of them. But the limelight wasn't on them for long as the gentle orange giant took centre stage. The orangutangs were so majestic as they slowly manouvered towards the food. The baby and it's mother did a good job of keeping the cheeky monkey's away from their food but it didn't last long, the whole experience itself didn't last long either. I was hoping to get closer than 20ft but then it wouldn't really be a rehabilitation centre then would it!?
#Flying back to KK was a sobering affair as it was our last night together which was really sad. The beer flowed and the line's from the Dragon Ball movie which we surrendered our lives to for an hour were coming out.
I've had such an amazing time with an amazing group and it was so hard leaving in the taxi the next day. I've got such great memories with all you guys esp my Danish companions. Couldn't have made it better! A La Mar!!!
