We woke this morning and said goodbye to our home of the last week, the Sea Mist Resort. After a hearty breakfast at the Picnic Box, we left Cape Cod and headed for the shores of Maine.
We didn't go very far before both of us had a great laugh...Lynn really wanted to stop at a place called the Christmas Tree Shop for one thing - she wanted a Christmas ornament from Cape Cod to remember our visit. Well, I missed the turn and had to go to the next exit and come back around but we finally got to the place, went in, lo and behold they don't have any Christmas stuff! Lynn asked the obvious question and the lady told her, "we're not a Christmas store; we just carry seasonal stuff."
You're kidding, right? Your store name IS the Christmas Tree Shop, right?
We left and headed up through Boston and eventually into Maine. On Harry's advice we visited a quaint little seaside town called Ogonquit for a lunch of lobster bisque and clam chowder before we decided to drive an extra 30 minutes up the coast and try to catch a glimpse of the summer home of George H.W. Bush and family in Kennebunkport. The place was amazing.
Protected by Secret Service agents, the family compound sits on a small peninsula called Walker Point; it's a beautiful but not terribly extravagant house built by the great great grandfather of G.W. Bush. Well worth the drive to see.
From there we drove west and took in the forested hills of west Maine and on into New Hampshire. Finally made it to the incredible majesty of Lake Winnipesaukee. Weather was not good at that point but the lake is unforgettably beautiful.
Crashed for the evening in the small town of Laconia.
Fun day.
