Dolphin watching in Kratie
My first stop in Cambodia was the small town of Kratie (pronounced Kracheh) on the Mekong river. My trip from don det wasn't too bad. However a word of advise for anyone travelling to siem reap. There is a new and quicker way from the Laos border however the ticket agencies aren't advertising it yet. You get a ticket to stung treng then at riverside cafe you can buy a ticket straight to siem reap on the new roads. It makes your journey a nice 8 hours as opposed to up to 24!!! I've got friends who have done it and it worked a treat.
As for me I boarded the VIP bus. Ha! The Cambodian version! Fortunately Kratie wasn't too far. As soon as I hopped off the bus I was approached by someone selling a room. Normally I shy away from such things however it was a good job I didn't this time. Silver dolphin guesthouse was a steal at $2 a night for a dorm room! Really friendly staff and pretty decent food. Most importantly €0.65 draft beer!
As for activities in Kratie I first went across to the little island of Koh Trong. I rented a push bike, took it across on the ferry and cycled around this cute little village. Literally no other westerners so it gives you an authentic experience of Cambodian life. We got accosted by two cute kids and ended up playing games for the afternoon! It was a really lovely day :).
The other main activity is dolphin watching. A 45 minute tuk tuk ride through the villages then an hour on a boat. The dolphins are there however it's not that easy to spot them. My photos were more of water than dolphins but it was a a nice thing to do especially at sunset.
I'm really glad I stopped off here. It's a nice break between Phnom Penh and gives you a look at a more authentic Cambodia away from the backpackers, not that I hate them or anything ;).
