Whoo! Hoo! We passed the 3k mileage marker today on our way to New Iberia LA...and what fun are we having.
...And why did we chose to go to New Iberia? It's all about Tabasco Sauce. We all use the hot red sauce on eggs, in our Bloody Marys, and soups, etc. Sunday Morning had an segment on Tabasco Sauce and the Mcllhenny family a few months ago, which caught Barbara's interest, because Avery Island, where the peppers are grown, was going to be on our route. The family has done an exceptional job setting up a self-directed tour incorporating the use of videos, displays, and viewing windows. We were there on a Sunday so we didn't see the machinery in operation, but it was still impressive. We learned lot and as a reward, the gift store had samples of almost all all their products including ice cream to try. Loved it. I could go into the history, but you should visit Avery Island yourselves to learn first hand the history of the family, the island, and the sauce.
Edward Avery Mcllhenny, the second son of the inventor of Tabasco Sauce, created a 170 acre botanical garden and bird sanctuary on Avery Island. We had the option of paying $8 per person to drive through the gardens. We were there in the off season. Flowers were not in bloom. Migratory birds had already left. We paid the money anyway. It was still a very magical place with moss covered trees, stands of bamboo, meandering waterways, and a variety permanent resident creatures including alligators. It was worth every penny for the smiles and awe we took away with us.
What a great day. A nice finish was a dip in the pool and another feast of left over Texan BBQ.
Tomorrow, we head for New Orleans.
