Day 81 - Up early we crossed to the road to meet our shuttle bus and after picking up a few more people we arrived at River Heads and caught the barge, a chilly ride, over to Fraser Island. After avoiding the sand flies we got on our 4WD bus, strapped ourselves in, and enjoyed the bumpy ride to the first stop of the old forestry camp at Central Station where we learnt about the history of the islands timber industry, walked on the boardwalk by the creek and even saw our first Kookaburra. After a quick stop off at Eurong Beach Resort we drove up the 75 Mile Beach (which isn't actually 75 miles long!) to the red and yellow coloured sands of the Pinnacles before finding the rusty beached wreck of the cruise ship Maheno. Last stop before lunch was Eli Creek with its beautifully clear, but very chilly waters, which flowed out into the sea. We wandered along the boardwalk past a variety of trees before dipping our feet in, very refreshing! Back at Eurong we had a tasty buffet lunch of pastas, rice, salads and much more, numerous helpings were had, before we looked around the shops at boomerangs and didgeridoos. Last stop of the day was Lake McKenzie which had crystal clear, slightly warmer waters, and a dazzlingly white beach. We spent an hour here in the water, sunbathing, writing postcards and admiring the beautiful view. Sadly we had to leave and the bus dropped us off for the barge back to the mainland. A big thank you from Catherine to Caro, Tim, Jess, Charlie and Joe for her lovely day out.
