After leaving the calm life of southern France we caught a train south of the border and soon found our self in the hot souther city of Barcelona! We caught a few metros and soon we were checking into our next hostel, St. Jordi Sagrada Familia, a VERY nice and new hostel located just blocks from the famous Sagrada Familia, with all the comforts any backpacker could ask for; large kitchen, HUGE common room filled with bean bag charis and large movie projector, many computers, and of course cool bedrooms. Our first night we met most of the other traverlers and with the help of a large 5 Liter bottle of wine we were all soon chatting and playing games well into the night. Around 12 we all decided to go out to a local festevial that had been going on in the city the week we were there. Within a few fast metor rides we were suddenly in a giant crowd of people in the middle of the street dancing and singing to a excellent Beatles coverband. After a few hours we were dead form all the travel and decided it was time to walk home and call it a night.
We awoke the next morning slowly and after a light breakfast we were out on our way to explore yet another city. We made our way over to the massive Sanagrada Fimilia, the famous church designed by the Brarcelona/Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. This church repersembeld a building pulled out of some movie like Lord of the Rings mixed with Star Wars, and less like a early building form the 1800s with its odd desigs of turrets, pillars, amd spirals. After marveling at the site for a while we decidede to continue on and see more of the city, but after just a few blocks we found our self sitting on some random street bench talking trying to excape the heat and sun. After a hour or so of still sitting we decide that we should just go back and actually relax in the cool comfort of our nice hostel. After a relaxing afternoon and evening we soon found our selfs garther again around the tables chatting and starting another fun night. Again around midnight we decided to go out on the town and soon found our self with much of the hostel in a large square at the festial linsting to the live music and having a grand time. After what seemed like minutes but was actually hours we returned to our hostel for a good nights sleep.
I awoke the next morning to find my arms covered in wrighting and drawings, and after a quick recon for the reason of this, I found out that I am "artist" when I drink, for it was my idea to cover my arms in "drawings". After a light breakfast we soon headed out into the city again this timed accompied by a threesom of Norwegian Girls that we had met. We soon found our selfs in the Park Guell, exploring the many paths, structures, artwork all designed by the same designer Gaudi. After our fill of the park, we set off for the beach to cool down and get a break form the heat. We relaxed in the warm water that allows you to spend hours in the water excaping form the unrenteling sun. As the evening hit we gather our stuff and soon took off to stop at a bar for some sangeria, tapas (a spanish dish of small dishes to go with your drinks), and paella (another spanigh dish of rice and various vetagables, meats, and seafood). Full and content we retuned to the hostel for yet another crazy night around the hostel and eventually going to the festival for the last night, unfortunally it was closed when we arrived. Regardless the night was still fun and exciting.
On our 4th day in Barcelona we were schedualed to go to another hostel, so we packed our bags and checked out but didnt leave for quite some time. Since we were up by 10, we decided that we would take advantage of this oppurtunity to go on a free tour of Gaudi´s work throughout the city. After seeing the many building that he designed really gave me a deep respect as well as understanding for this amazing design type. After the long hot tour we returned to our old hostel relaxed a bit, gathered our bags and set off to our next hostel. After a fast metro ride we were soon off the busy road called the Ramberler, in our hostel named Kabul. This was voted as one of the best party hostels in Europe, but unfortually after a few nights here we came to realize that our other hostel was not only WAY cooler, it had a a much better party vibe. Regardelss we soon met many people and spent the night wandering the streets, having some beers, and stoping at a few bars to make for a very fun night in Barca.
On our final day here we got up earlier and went out on another tour, this time to see the gothic building and learn a bit more about the history of the city as well. After a very long tour, we met up with a large group of traverlers all staying at our hostel and set out for another relaxing afternoon at the beach. After a few hours again playing in the refreshing water, we returned to our hostel, had some dinner and all started to prepare for our final evening in the city that really never sleeps. Around 1, our hostel gathered us all together and we set out to a very large club called Opium, hahaha and no they did not serve any of the drug but im sure you could find it if oyu wanted. After a few hours of dancing we were all verv tierd and dead we decided to walk back to our hostel. Met a very cool guy form France on our wa that had evidently just did some coke and was too out of it to be in the clubs, so we walked and chatted with him as we walked home.
We awoke early again the next morning, checked out and by 11 were on our train out of the city, on to our next city in the ending of an amazing journey. Barcelona was quite a time and I highely reccomend it to anyone that is ever in Spain.
