Caroline & Ed's travels
Arrived in Nadi to absolutely scorching weather even though it was 3am! Got to our Aqaurius hostel and couldn't sleep too well because of the time change. Rained the whole next day so we went around Nadi town and bought some essentials and non-essentials (sunnies, flip flops and biccies!). We arrived in Fiji without a real plan so we spole to the people at the hostel for recommendations and got a cheap deal on a 4 day sailing safari in the Yasawa islands so booked that for the next day and then 3 nights at the Beachouse on the Coral Coast on the south of the main island, Viti Levu, for the last few days.
Packed up a bag between us for the boat and got ourselves ready. I was still pretty apprehensive as I'm not a great sailor but Ed was well up for it so I tried to feed off his enthusiasm!
We were still eating our pancakes for breakfast when we were picked up by our guide the next day so we wolfed them down and got bussed down to Denarau marina where the boat was waiting. There were only 5 others on the trip with us which was a bit off-putting at first but turned out to be a good thing because it gave the guys running the tour more time for us. There were 2 aussie girls on holidays from uni in Melbourne (wish I could have had a holiday in Fiji when I was at uni!), an older aussie lady from Brisbane, a guy from Sydney and a VERY German German called Michael who was about 40. A pretty mixed bag of people by anyone's standards!
We were at sea for about 5 hours that day and one of the girls was sick for most of the day and Ed was pretty ill the next day at sea too but somehow managed to wait until we got ashore before he got worse and broke out in sweats and fever and generally being pretty ill. This was pretty annoying for me because I couldn't call him a nancy boy for getting seasick. He'd got really sunburnt the day before so we reckon it was some nasty sunstroke.
We stopped to snorkel and saw some amazing coral despite the water not being really clear in places because of all the rain that had been coming down for the last couple of days making it cloudy. We arrived at the 'Barefoot Island' reasort on Drawaqa Island late thursday afternoon and checked out our bure (a fijian thatched beachouse). It was pretty basic place: mud floor, two beds, a mosquito net and plenty of creepy crawlies! We were surprised about how basic it was but I guess they were trying to get us back to traditional fijian living. There was no electricity on the island apart from the fridge in the main living bure where we had our meals (and that was just so they could keep the ingredients for the cocktails cool to make a few extra quid out of us. Not daft these Fijians!). The toilets and (cold)showers were huts and we had to use water sparingly because the island has no fresh water supply. The living so simply was pretty fun though and the lack of facilities didn't affect the quality of the meals which were still yummy after a hard days snorkelling and sailing!
