On the pass approaching Lima we passed long sandy beaches that could not have looked less appealing if they tried. The sky was grey and it had been raining. We´d heard bad things about Lima and our first impressions were not good. We decided to head to a beach suburb called Miraflores and to our surprise it was clean, modern, with a pretty park in the centre and generally pleasing to the eye. The beach itself is awful, but the café culture, restaurants and nightlife made up for it. So, it was a perfect spot to celebrate Kelly´s b-day, which we did to excess. On the Friday nite we we out for a fancy dinner where there was a Cuban band playing, then on Saturday we went for a cheap dinner (whilst secretly drinking a bottle of vodka) then onto a few bars, a salsa club and finally to a cool beach club where we danced til 4am and met some v.friendly locals (which always helps you to have fond memories of a place). Then on the Sunday we went to a restaurant (recommended by a local) that was on the beach and v.posh indeed. We ate what was probably the best fish dish I´ve ever tasted, and the whole experience really felt like we were treating ourselves, it was really swanky! The grand total for such an amazing feast was 17pounds each!
It felt so good to be back at sea level and Kelly & I even went for a jog along cliffs overlooking the beach.I didn´t realize how much I miss my jogs along the seafront, we both finished it feeling really good, and went back for more the next day.
Lima has a lot of positives, we had a great experience there, but sadly that was to be the end of our wonderful times with Kelly.
The next day we flew to Iquitos (The Amazon basin in the NE of Peru). We flew with Peruvian Airlines for $130 return and were impressed by the quality of the plane and how smart the air hostesses were. Most importantly, the landing and take off we smooth for such a small plane, and Stu managed to crush my hand just the once!
