Firstly Happy New Year everyone.
I hope all your Christmas and New Year celebrations were enjoyable as ours certainly was but also very very different. As Claire finished off in the last update we were both making the most of the pre christmas parties, which were all great fun. A couple of days before Christmas we thought we would have our own christmas party/bbq. We had a great time. Except we went shopping for it and got 3 boxes of beer, plenty of wine and it was meant to last us the christmas period - well it lasted us that one day!!! The party was a huge success, the bbq was great, the music was playing, partypoppers popping and sparklers sparkling.
I spent Christmas eve morning hoovering up after party poppers and preparing my 'pigs in blankets' for christmas day!! Christmas eve was to be no different on the party front, Claire was working so we headed into the city to meet her and Chris (the hard workers - yeah right - ask them what work they actually did....went shopping and got paid for it, its alright for some hey!!). We planned a pubcrawl starting from the city then ending up at the pub near our flat. Seeing as half our friends are Irish we started in an Irish bar. We slowly made our way through the local pubs, but its very different from home as half of them were very quiet and in one bar we were practically the only people in there. However instead of having to go out dressed in boots and coats we were still hot
in skirts and thin tops!!! Having Christmas in the sun is very odd and I don't think you would ever get used to it. We had a great night moving from pub to pub. Then we decided to head to the pub right near our flats, but when we got there can you believe it was shut!!! So we had to finish the evening back at our place with more drinks and see in Christmas Day in Sydney.
On Christmas morning, I cooked bacon and eggs for everyone at our flat, washed down by some champagne. We had organised a secret santa so we exchanged presents - some being what we wanted and some being not so much, but its all good fun. Claire and I had got each other a stocking which was really nice and we both had prezzies from home so we were very lucky. Thank you everybody for all our gifts we love them all. We had a really nice morning. Claire and I then said goodbye to everyone as we headed over to Jo and Rob's for Christmas day.
We caught a cab over to Jo's, which took ages because of all the traffic and we couldn't believe that lots of the shops were open....! Jules and Pippa and families were there as well. At lunch we made a toast to all of you at home as we were thinking of you all (wish you could have been with us). We again had arranged a secret santa so more lovely gifts. The day was great and it wasn't boiling hot so we could sit in the garden without melting. Thank you so much Jo and Rob for hosting a fab Christmas day the other side of the world.
Boxing day was a different matter, it was about 28 degrees so we headed to Bondi Beach for a BBQ the true Australian way (And for you Dad and Uncle Alan)!! It was bazaar that we were on the beach on boxing day sunning ourselves. We went in and out the sea (well up to our hips!!). We sat and had glasses of vino from the esky!! We were thinking of you all at home in the cold - honestly - hehe!!!!
In the evening we just chilled out after a very hectic couple of weeks.
The next couple of days we unfortunately had to go back to work - this working lark gets in the way of having fun!! But come the weekend we were back to party mode. We had arranged ages ago to go to the Sydney Revolving Sky Tower for dinner. We met at the opera bar and a couple of Rob's mates from home also came along. The restaurant has amazing views of the city and we went at the twilight time so saw day, sunset and night time. We did occasionally feel sea sick as it was turning. It was a really good evening made better by not having to pay for any of our drinks-result!! We then of course
went out in the city afterwards for a few more bevvies.
On the Sunday I headed to Jo and Rob's again for a barbie, in aid of Ian and Jamie being over from the UK. You may recognise Jamie from adverts, tv and film!!! We had a great day, again the intention was not to drink but that soon changed. We finished the night off singing karoke-oh dear!!
Then the next day was the day we have been waiting for - New Year's Eve. We were up fairly early having prepared a big picnic to last us the day and the night. A few of us met at our place first seeing as we had so much food, drinks and bits and bobs, we needed many hands. We slowly made our way to Cirular Quay where we caught a ferry over the harbour to Cremorne Point which would be our base for the next 11 hours. We found a really good spot at the front, so we spread our stuff out so we had a good amount of space. There was Claire and I, Jo, Rob, Lewis, Libby, Neal, Sean, Jaimo, Ian, Shaz and Ange. We had such a good day, it was scorching hot and again bazaar as there we were on NYE in our bikini's!! We were lucky with our spot as we were above a swimming pool (which was free) so we could go for a dip if we got too hot. We spent the day eating, drinking, singing, listening to music, laughing and joking - it was a ball. The day went really quickly even thought we were just waiting for the fireworks. Here in Australia they have two sets of fireworks, one set at 9pm which are so the children can see them without having to stay up until midnight and then another set at midnight for us oldies (hehe). Jo and rob left after the 9pm ones and then watched them on TV. Both sets of fireworks were amazing. They lasted about 10 minutes each and it was just constant. On the Sydney Harbour Bridge they had an egg timer that counted down and then spun round when it was midnight. Then at the end of the fireworks in the sky the entire bridge lit up with hundreds coming off the bridge - it really was stunning. Our view was perfect andd we all had the best day. One we will never forget.
So there we are, we have been busy little bees. We have had a different but amazing Christmas and New Year here in Oz, lots of fun all round.
I will see you all very soon. Again, Happy New Year to you all.
Love and miss you Lots
Carly and Claire
