Hi Everyone
Sorry it has been so long since our last update, we have been busy working. We made our way back from Broome without any more hitches. We tried to stop off at different places on the way back so we got to see different places. We managed to do it in 4 days! It was a bloody long way.
Our first stop was Canarvon and our second Port Headland. These places have got nothing for tourists to see, they were built specifically for industry. Port Headland produces salt and both towns have a big Iron Ore mines. The mines are making the news here at the moment as they are paying their workers really well as they find it really hard to get people to work in WA.
Lots of people are leaving school early to go and work in the mines because they money is so good. Our last stop was Kalbarri which was one of the best places we stopped at in the whole trip. Kalbarri is a national park. It is really beautiful, this is where Natures Window is, you will probably recognise it when you see our photos. It is alot greener down here than up north. The landscape changes really dramatically as you are driving along the coastal highway, one minute there won't be any sign of vegitation then you will be in the middle of the bush.
When we arrived back from our long journey we went to the local pub with a few friends. They have such a good idea over here, you pay $10 and you get a meat pack with 2 sausages and a steak, and a pint! You give your meat pack to they bbq man, he cooks it for you and you go back when it done and collect your meat and loads of salad and bread. $10 is about 4 pound!!! I think they should do stuff like that in England. It was a really good night.
We are now staying in Cowaramup which 2 minutes away from Margaret River. We are staying with Ross and Kerry who are Scotts parents. They have been so nice to us. They said we can stay here while we work and they have helped us with getting a job and all the clothes we needed. It wasn't easy getting a job here. We came at a really crap time of year. We were planning on working on the Vine yards but prunning season has just finished so there's not alot to do until the sun starts to shine and the vines start to grow!
Luckily we did a bit of name dropping and that really worked. We went to an agency in Margaret River and told the lady we were staying with Ross and Kerry and that Liam was related to Alan Dornan and she told us to come back the next day. So we did, she signed us up and we started work the next day. The work is really, really boring. We are shoot thining, which is basically picking shoots off the vines to give room for the rest to grow. We have been doing for a week now and my finger print has already been worn away. We were sent home from work the other day as the weather was too bad. I have never seen rain like it, it hammered it down and we didn't have any wet weather trousers! We got soaked to the skin and I was bloody freezing. Not the kind of weather you expect in Oz!
Normally we have to work in the rain but that was just too bad. I was happy to go home but you don't get paid for what you don't do. Kerry and Ross have very kindly lent us wet weather stuff so we won't get caught out again. It is nice being outside when the sun is shining, I would hate to be stuck inside. You have to plaster yourself in sun cream though, as you are out in it for 9 1/2 hours a day. We do finish at 1.00pm on a Friday which is good. We start at 7.00am and finish at 4.30pm Mon - Thurs.
We started off being paid per hour which was quite good money but now we are being paid per vine which was meant to be better but it's not. It obviously depends on how fast you are to how much you earn, so we are only stopping for 2 minutes to eat our lunch then we carry on. We are so tired at the end of the day. We will be doing this for another 7 weeks then we will drive over east at the begining of December.
The van has broke again!!!!! That bloody thing has cost us so much money. It's the glow plugs this time, so that will be in the garage next week. We have got loads of photos to put on but STA have changed this website and have changed the software they use to download the photos on and it doesn't work. We have tried 3 different computers now and none of them work. I will sort it out though so beware you will have loads of e-mails coming with new photos from us.
Hope everyone is ok, we are missing you all lots.
Carey and Liam xxx
