The world is my school and today I learned how a glacier forms. Today since I was sooooo exited to go to the helicopter I woke up early and got a shower while everyone was still sleeping. The glacier helicopter ride and hike was sooooo fun. I learned that the glacier is formed by snow falling down on the top of a mountain in a bowl they call the neve. Then it gets compressed down and while it is doing that it gets made into ice. The ice slowly moves down the valley and it becomes the glacier.
When we got to the glacier and were getting out of the helicopter I thought my heads was going to get knocked off by the propeller at the top. When we got up ont he ice we learned how to put our crampons are. Crampons are like snow shoes but they have super spikes that dig into the ice so you can walk without falling on the glacier. The glacier was warm, but cold. It was chunky (like the ice was rocks sticking up) yet some places were smooth. I could have stayed there all day long.
There were some caves in the glacier that we got to go in. One of them was dripping water like CRAZY and sadly but happily I got some of it down my shirt. The glacier we saw and went on was called the Franz Josef and it moves 4-7 meters everyday. Now that is a lot!!!!! It is a special glacier there are only 3 like it in the world. It lives in a warm climate near the sea with a rain forest right at the bottom. Only the Fox Glacier right next to it and one on South America do this. The water in the glacier was sooooo good to drink. Of course my Dad was the first to try it but I was the second. Since I cannot explain the glacier anymore please go to pictures and look at my glacier folder. You wont believe it til you see it.
After the glacier heli hike we went on a hike through the rain forest to Tatare Tunnels. There was freezing cold water up to your ankles but it was worth it to see one glow worm. A glow worm looks like a worm with a green light dot on its very end. We also saw a thing that looked like a flying shrimp alien. Later I found out it was a May Fly not an alien but watching a TV show on the Discovery Channel. That shows my Mom sometimes that TV is educational!
That was mainly the day and after that we just had some fun and ran around.
