Hope you are all well! I'm still waiting for it to sink in that i'm here and things have been a bit hectic so far - you're pretty much thrown in at the deep end.
On Sunday, when i arrived, we had a big bbq "braai" with my host family and the weather was gorgeous. I was half asleep though because I didnt sleep on the flight over. On Monday I had my induction, was shown how the public transport works etc and then yesterday was my first day at my journalism placement. After being here 30seconds i was told to accompany one of the other reporters to Khayelitsha, which is the largest black township in Cape Town. We didnt enter the shack area but went to the school there to find out about a riot that broke out amongst the students. It was shocking to see the shacks and its extremely intimidating entering the area as a young white girl because everyone stares/leers at you. I think we're going to another township today in the Cape Flats but this is a 'coloured' township. I will try and take some photos.
On a lighter note, we went to an Irish pub last night for St Patrick's day and it was nice to relax. I only had 3 hours sleep though so i think today will drag. We have a social thgis evening organised by projects abroad so it should be a good chance to meet some other volunteers.
Not sure what the plan is for the rest of the week but i'll try and update this at the weekend or soon after.
Much love xxx
