To the Jawoyn people, of southern Kakadu, this area is known as buladjang, or ''sickness country'', pockets of land not fit for regular habitation. The Jawoyn people tried to warn mining companies that came to mine Uranium that it was dangerous to do so on this land. Of course they didn't listen until there were many deaths from Uranium leaks and workers were found to have drank and showered in water containing 400 times the legal limit of uranium. Finally they listened, little to late but they eventually shut the mine down. It is also said that if you fall and cut yourself here as one lady put it "if you cut yourself it will not heal and you will die" Not what we were wanting to here before climbing the falls! Very interesting place!
