We woke up to our early morning alarm, ready to see some blowholes. Punakaiki is famous for its 'pancake rocks' and blowholes, which form with a mixture of rainwater and waves over a long time. We had googled what time the high tide was the night before, as that is the best time to see the blowholes, but sadly despite arriving at exactly 8.34am as suggested, the wind and waves were not strong enough to form any. Still pretty cool to see some pancake looking rocks.
We carried on our beautiful scenic drive along the west coast up to a seal colony near Westport where we enjoyed watching lots of seals playing around in the rockspools. We also enjoyed a nice sunny coastal walk up to a lighthouse and finished it off with an Icecream.
The drive continued up to Buller gorge swingbridge, however after entering the reception we soon left as Chris's fear of heights got the best of him.
Undecided where to go next, we checked out a mini waterfall nearby in Murchison and headed to a rugby pitch with a picnic table so we could cook our dinner in peace without being bitten by sandflies.
Once the sandflies started to make an appearance we called it a day and drove up to St Arnaud (Nelson Lakes) - ready for our hike up Mt Roberts early tomorrow. Our campsite has been named lord of the sandflies but luckily it doesn't compare to our last experience and we have planned not to get out of the van..
ps - encase you were wondering where this blog got its name from, Chris was driving with his elbow in his muffin and it got all over his jumper and was very funny
