Everybody’s gone surfing.. surfing Canggu Bay
Kabupaten Badung, Indonesia
We were not massively impressed by Canggu having spent the last 2 nights there. Bit of a surfer vibe but far too quiet. Except for the 2 sausage dogs that guarded our hotel who liked to bark at the cat at 8am. Or the puppy at 7am. Or the massive Doberman (who was more of a pussycat) in the evening. Our room was nice with a deep pool to sunbath but wasn’t much to do there and more expensive. We were spoilt by the cheap/good food in Ubud and sadly the new place just couldn’t compete - paying £4 for a main seems alien to us now.
As Canggu is famous for surfing with its big waves, we decided to have a lesson each with a 1:1 instructor rather than just ‘having a go’. Boy, were we glad we did. The waves were big but the currents that could take you away from shore were also hidden - wouldn’t want to get caught up with those. Our instructors proclaimed to be more than ‘just beach boys’ and true to their word they had decent English and gave us a good grounding in the theory before letting us loose. Surfing is HARD. So much effort paddling out to the waves before riding them back to the shore! Both managed to stand up but Nat did so many more times! Our ribs are still bruised from lying on the board and Nat has several cuts from her board!
We made good use of the pool and sadly as we can’t ride scooters spent a large part of the evening dodging other people on theirs as we walked to the next town. As before, most of the buzz and life is drained by neighbouring Seminyak.
For the first time we used ‘Gojek’ today - Indonesia’s answer to Uber. But instead of just cars or food delivery you can request everything from a moped to a massage. Our driver looked like he didn’t like us much and certainly kept a dignified silence for the whole trip to Seminyak. His unfriendly parting smile along with ‘sorry, but I can’t help you with your bags’ pretty much summed up our journey. Luckily he didn’t drive off straight away as Nat only realised she had left her small rucksack in the footwell once we were checking in!
Decided to take a walk around Seminyak town to get our bearings. Nat always chooses to do this between the hours of 11-1 when it is boiling hot... She also says she never gets time to tan but her photos beg to differ. Seminyak is a bit of us though - some nice places with a few cheap gems in between. We eventually made it round to have pizza and salad at our hotel before lazing by the pool until dinner (vegan fish and chips anyone?). Might stay here for a night more than we planned - maybe it’s the buzz. Maybe it’s the window to the toilet we can see from our bed - who knows... Happy pooping x
