1. We drive around Death Valley marvelling at the sheer size of the park and taking in amazing sights, canyons and rock formations.
2. We find some dunes, where taking advantage of sunny weather I - and some other tourists - lie down on the sand and have a serene beach-like nap for a few minutes while Jan explores.
3. On a very rough road we test our offroader driving out for 1h to the famed Racetrack Playa, a huge dry lake, famous for its sailing rocks (Wikipedia: a geological phenomenon where slabs of dolomite and syenite ranging from a few hundred grams to hundreds of kilograms inscribe visible tracks as they slide across the playa surface, without human or animal intervention, most likely propelled by wind). The exact mechanics of those movements are not yet known to science and several theories exist.
4. On the nice paved road out of the park we catch a flat tyre out of the blue! But, it's still bright, no wind, snow or rain so no panic! After some minor setbacks, with the help of a passing driver (thank you!) and two jacks we manage to change it (first time for both of us!) Good thing he was passing too, as during the hour it took us nobody else appeared on that middle-of-nowhere road.
5. We keep driving until dark, buy some sandwhiches on exiting the park (because other stuff in the restaurant is just prohibitively expensive) and drive on until we reach God-forsaken town of Bakersfield, where we find a cheap motel and crash. The objective for tomorrow is the Sequoia National Monument!
