Craig & Jills Round the World Trip
Merida was our next stop after Mexico City. We made it safe and sound after the plane had to be fixed on the runway prior to take off and then the engine cut out when we landed! To make matters worse as we coasted down the runway in merida we saw a huge snake slither across the runway! Merida was our base for the next 4 nights. On Thursday we took a day trip to Chichen Itza, an ancient mayan city. To be continued, on route to Puerta Vallarta for some rest on the beach
Merida in the Yucatan penisula, was our base for the next 4 nights. On thursday we took a day trip to chichen itza, the mayan city. Here we learned about how all the buildings were built in corrulation to the sun and planets, it was very impressive. In the centre of the city was a pyramid, smaller than those in Teothuican, however just as impressive, the white stone pyramid aginst the green grass, trees and blue sky. It also had 1000 stone columns all in straight lines. We bought some mayan wooden masks, and if we had not been travelling probably bought a lot more of the local handicrafts up for sale. Friday we walked into the centre of Merida, passing lots of beutiful haciendas, some of which needed some restoration. In the centre was a pretty square, surrounded by more historic buildings, including the oldest church in the americas. Once again we were allowed to wander round all the buildings, and Craig even sat at the council meeting chambers. The place had lots of narrow streets lined with old/crumbling buildings. It has a nice atmosphere and its safe to wander around, the people are very friendly. We have even risked local transport. The only thing we haven't enjoyed is the heat, its been very humid, which has made it hard work climbing pyramids. Saturday we went on another day trip to more mayan ruins at Uxmal and Kabba. Here we saw lots of impressive stone buildings with carvings of gods and other symbolic symbols. They date back to as early as 400AD. We also got to see lots of big iguanas(huge lizards) basking on the rocks! We have really enjoyed touring this area.
