Puerto Madryn well known for its whale watching - so we headed there in the anticipation that they might just be still around. News was traveling around that they were still about and had not started their long journey to the northern coasts of Brazil.
Hi Patagonia was our digs for three nights. The Hostel was run by Gustan, who was a real nice guy and so laid back he may well have been a deck chair in his previous life. Our first night he held a Parilla (BBQ) for all his guests, this included pretty much all the meat and wine you could want to satisfy yourself with! There we mingled with fellow travelers and it soon led to a heavy night at the local bars and clubs, returning for sun rise with a very dizzy head! The following day was a complete right off, solely to do with the alcohol consumed the previous night…opps! Though the next day we were heading to the Peninsula Valdes praying we would see the whales!
First we encountered the Penguins swimming in their natural habitat, who were not really bothered by how close we were, they were more afraid of the intriguing sea lion. From there we trekked to see the sea lion colonies, and what a noise they made! It was mating season, so the males were a bit lively and making some strange croaking noises. We were secretly praying that a big Orca (killer whale) would wash up and eat one, just so we could get a great shot with our camera, wrong I know, but what a shot it would have been! From there we jumped on a boat for our big chance to see the Orcas! We got excited when we caught a glimpse of something moving in the water far out, but it turned out to be a lonely sea lion…b*****!But the boat trip wasn't a complete loss as we got kitted out in wetsuits, flippers and mask (actually just me, as Emma was too nervous about there being killer whales lurking in the water to get in!) I jumped into the water to explore. After coming up to wipe my mask, I saw a sea lion in the distance who took a dive as he saw me. Quickly putting on my mask, I dived down, as I done this he swam under me and gave me an intriguing look! hmmmm! He must have been quite intrigued cos he kept coming back! Quite weird at first but after awhile it was very cool! And greatly made up for not seeing the whales!
That was pretty much the end of the Peninsula Valdes and our trip to Puerto Madryn, even if we didn't get to see the whales we were lucky enough to swim with a sea lion, see Penguins, stay in a good hostel and meet some great people!
Next to stop Barriloche and another 16 hour coach ride!
