We had a great time staying with David and Virginia in Sydney and my cousin Ann and Douglas in Gunning, just north of Canberra.? We hired a car in Sydney and drove down the coast on the way to Gunning taking in some fantastic views and had lunch on the coast before heading inland through Kangaroo Valley (No roo's on show for us and we're still to see any at all), and Fitzroy Falls before arraiving at Gunning.? Ann and Douglas took us to Canberra and some great views from Mt Ainslee before Ann gave us a guided tour of the National Museum (Ann was a guide there until last year so we had a professional job).? Also visited their old business which was a large stable yard not far from the airport. Met the new owners and Ann and Douglas enjoyed seeing the changes.? Great meal that night - thanks again.? Back to Sydney and rain had stopped (lots of Aus is in drought so very welcome dousing) and met up with B's cousin Allenby and wife Sue, son Charles, Corinne and baby Jack, (Last met Allenby and Sue in 1971 in Cornwall - great to catch up albeit briefly). Then out for a good curry with D&V and Janet and Gwen as it was Virginia's xx birthday.? Saturday was a tour round Sydney and the weather was superb, clear blue skies and lovely temperature. Manly beach for coffee watching the surfers and lots of fit people followed by North Head for more stunning views before meeting up with Ian Shaw for lunch at Doyles Fish Restaurant in one of the bays facing Sydney. Thanks Ian, great to catch up and glad the business is going well. Then we took a ferry across the bay to Opera House and Botanical gardens. Jane couldn't get over the way the tiles are set out on the Opera House roof.? Stunning building and Virginia has played in the?main hall so we felt closer to it than we would otherwise have!? The Botanical gardens have thousands of fruit bats so not to be missed by a biologist - they have wingspans up to 6 feet and they were all hanging?upside down until take off.? Lots of really noisy Whitye Crested Cockatoos flying around and dive bombing us (so it seemed). We waited till dusk to see the bats take off and then headed to a bar (No thongs allowed which was a bit of a surprise but?we then found out they are flip flops) after taking a few pictures of the opera House and Harbour Bridge as the sun went down.? Finished off with a noodle meal and another drink watching the night climbers coming off the bridge.? Up at 5.30 to get the flight to Cairns. more later and check out the new photos.
