Well we have made it onto the last stage of our journey around the world. we were sad to leave Australia as we had had such a good time in Perth and on the Ningaloo reef. On the last night Jean had arranged a family gathering at her house which turned out to be a very enjoyable affair - It was great to meet Milan's family and join in with the banter. We had been to the rugby match earlier - Australia v Fiji. which turned out to be somewhat of a white wash with Fiji not even putting up a good fight. Still it was good to go to Subiaco studio and see how easy it is to travel to/from main spectacles in this part of the world.
We left Perth for an over night stop in Singapore before moving onto Siem Reap in Cambodia. We managed to cram in a night river tour and meal in Singapore which seemed so hot and crowded after Perth. The river tour was delightful with lots of interesting spectacles to see, ranging from a typical China town scene to some impressive skyscrapers and modern hotels. The worst was to come as Bryan insisted we get up at 3:00am to catch the 6:00 am flight to Siem Reap, even though the airport was only 20 mins away and the ticket said turn up 40 mins in advance! We arrived in Cambodia feeling tired and was hit by the heat and humidity - 36 C on the first day - gulp. Our guide whisked as off to the very impressive temples at Ankor Thom, water way was amazing in its size and the temple itself still mainly accessible with some impressive carvings. by the time lunchtime arrived we were relieved to get out the heat and crashed in the air conditioning of our hotel for an afternoons siesta before going onto the largest and most impressive temple of Ankor Wat (largest in the world apparently) for a sunset visit. Absolutely amazing in terms of its size and wall carvings - especially the one depecting heaven and hell - if you were sent to hell you would endure horrendous punishments such as the tongue cut out and teeth pulled if you were a gossip, or being stuck with a thousadn nails if you were an abortionist! There are 3 layers to the templeand the climb to the top is up a sheer crumblng sandstone staircase, with no railings - and I only had flip flops on!
Today we went into the jungle to find the river of a thousand lingas - put my trainers on for this one but that still didn't stop me tripping over some tree roots and hurting my knee! This was thought to be holy water, it has many carvings in the river bed and the king and queen would come to bath in a small waterfall to purify and invigorate the body. By the time we had climbed back down through the jungle in the heat and high humidity we could have done with some of the magic!
