Mike's RTW Trip 06/07
We finally arrived at Beijing station. Dan and I happened to be staying in the same hostel and decided to get the metro to there instead of a cab. The first thing that happens when you leave the station is that there is ahuge crowd waiting outside. Its a little daunting but with a little pushing, and being a lot bigger than most you make your way through. You also get hounded by taxi drivers for your custom. We made it through and got to the Metro. We had to pay 6 Juan for both of us, that's 1.5 pence each! I think once you are used to one metro then all the rest are easy. Especially since they only have about 3 lines. We made it to our hostel fairly easy but the thing that struck me most was the assault of smells on your senses. There is so much food being cooked that you get hungary walking 200m up the road.
The hostel was really nice and I had my own room which was great. We met up with some of the other lads and went for Peking duck for dinner. It was good, but they give you to much duck fat as well. Christian you would of loved it though. They do not shred the duck they carve it. The rest is the same, pancakes, spring onions and hoi sin sauce. We then went drinking in bar street. And as the name suggest there are about 50 bars one next to the other all they way along the street. I think there must be a drnking challenge in there somewhere.
I had to be up at 5am as I had a cab booked for 5:30 to Beijing airport for my transfer to Hong Kong. I look forward to getting back to Beijing as the city felt alive, busy and very safe.
