Hỏa Lò prison or The Hanoi Hilton
Originally a French prison called Hỏa Lò but renamed by American prisoners sarcastically maybe ironic comment on conditions during their stay in the 1960's. It must be remembered that conditions for those imprisoned by the French, that is, local Vietnamese who objected to French occupation was very poor, if not downright brutal. It was, in the words of another French general 'pour encourager les autres'. Well perhaps dis-encourage would be a better way of putting it.
