After our little taster of work in Darwin we were geared up to do some more in Kunurrura, this time it was fruit picking. We were all prepared for a bit hard work butwe never knew what laid ahead
Me and Jonny were first to get work on a farm picking melons and pumpkins so armed with our 5 litres of water we set off at 5:30am (not seen that time of day for a long time) Things all started well but the 30c heat set in and the sweat began to pour. At the end of the day, 15mins short of a 12 hour day, just about everything was hurting but it was quite laid back and the boys were a good laugh. Second day and we were on butternut pumpkins...oh my god what a nightmare!!! There are so many you struggle to keep up with the tractor and bending over all the time is not good. I said to the supervisor my back was really hurting, he just said "don't stand up straight so much"...work that one out?? Anyway, I was beginning to think that was my last day, an hour later I was going to quit at lunch time then half hour later I was ready to walk out there & then. Me & Jonny stuck it out but that was it for us.
Not put off we got another job picking corn. Had to walk alot but no bending over and with ipod in hand it was easier going. The work was only for 4 days but at least it was money. However, the wages weren't great. Think of it as someone giving you a fiver every hour but asking for a pound change!!
On Friday when we all finished we had a night out at the local, ended up in the back of a police car...but it was just a free lift home.
