Brett & Lindsay's Travels
We're ok. We've been on Ko Phi Phi which didn't have very reasonable internet or phone services. They don't even allow motorized vehicles on the island. I promise we'll attach pictures when we get a chance; however, the picture above is of Koh Phi Phi ley, which they filmed the movie 'The Beach' at and we visited on a boat trip.
I don't think any pictures or words can truely describe this place. A lagoon beach surrounded by limestone monoliths jutting out from the ocean floor. It's by far the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Rock climbing, hiking around the jungle island, monkeys (so they claim, but I never saw one), and crystal clear waters with some of the worlds best snorkeling and diving a mere 50 yards from the beaches. There is only foot traffic, so no noisy tuk tuks.
I hiked to a viewpiont the first day at the top of one of the mountains where you can see the entire island and continued on to the other side of the island to a secluded beach. The only way to get to some of the bungalows is by a long tail boat.
The seafood here is great, caught daily, and great little island bars to relax at.
The second day Lindsay fell a little Ill, so I ended up taking a long tail boat trip around the Island by myself with some other tourists. We toured aroung to secluded beaches, snorkeled in three different spots, and went to feed the monkeys bananas, which never showed.
For those that don't know, Phi Phi was one of the placed devestated by the Tsunami in 04. They had 1,500 people on the island die, and nearly half were tourists. There are ribbons on the trees that each represent a life that was saved by that tree during the tsunami. A lot of places are still being rebuilt.
We took the boat back to the main land yesterday and took an overnight train back to bangkok. When we got to the train station six hours after we had left the island we saw breaking news on BBC that there was a 6.4 earthquake near the same location that occured 2 years ago and that there was a possible cause for another tsunami. We've been in the dark since, but thank god no tsunami's this time.
We're done with our Asian leg and are getting on a plane to Frankfurt this evening. Hopefully we'll get the pics uploaded there. Lindsay sayst to pray for her to pass the bar. She's counting down the days until the 18th!!
