Lindsay and I ditched the kids with the family and went on an overnight trip to Locarno, which sits on the North side of Lake Maggiore, to celebrate our anniversary. I was excited to get away and spent time with Lindsay, to cross the border into Switzerland, and this was also finally going to be my chance to see, up close, the glacial summets of the high alpine mountain ranges. The latter would have to wait, yet again as the day was hazy most afternoon followed by a spattering of sprinkles.
It was a two hour drive from San Siro to Locarno. I immediately noticed the difference in the roads and tunnels as we crossed the border, the streetlights, the sidewalks, and the buildings. While I thouroughtly enjoy the lazzeiz faire attitude that exudes from the Italian people who like to absorb life, the immediate difference in the well kept nature of the surroundings certainly shows what the addition of a little more ambition within a culture can acheive.
Lindsay and I spent the day walking the town, shopping and dining, taking the funicular up to the Madonna del Sasso, and then collapsing in our hotel room for a late day knap. Our room was quaint, but offered probably the best views in the city from our balcony of the lakeside promenade and marina. The meals were pleasently suprisingly good. We happened upon a place for lunch where I had rabbit and polenta, and Lindsay had a pesto Caprese and spaghetti bolagnese that was exquisite. That evening we went on a hunt for a good place to eat some pork Schnitzel, which we had both been craving, and found a place with a Biergarten which did not let us down. It was nice to take a breather and to reminisce about the trip that we took when we were engaged.
