The castle was originally built under Emperor. Hadrian as a mausoleum for his family. It was a prison, a mausoleum and a safe haven for the Pope. There is a hidden tunnel underneath that runs to the Vatican. If the Pope is ever in trouble, he moves through the secret tunnel into the castle for safety.
