Helen in Africa
This is just a quick entry as I'm about to leave to catch the overnight bus to Uganda, where I will spend the whole of tomorrow white-water rafting on the Nile river, with a quick bungy jump before dinner at the camp. Then I come back on Sunday in time for our mobile clinic in Masailand on Monday. Things are busy and hectic here but there is always something new and exciting here. Life is full of adventure.
Today Jayne took us to the camp site for the clinic which is currently under construction, ie. the tents are being put up. We did some mobilisation around the area and have arranged for some people to spread the word at the local church services on Sunday. We have enough food and medical supplies and HIV tests for 500 people and are expecting a high turn out.
Visiting the local community was difficult. They are some of the poorest people I have seen here. They came to the country to escape the slums in Nairobi, but while there is not the same danger here, food is scarce and the families live in little more than tin houses.
The man who is letting us camp on his land was a Mao Mao freedom fighter forty years ago during Kenya's fight for independance. He spent 15 years in a prisoner of war camp and showed us the gunshot wounds and torture marks on his body. Now he lives in what you could describe as a burnt down house with his wife and children. When we met his wife she had just given birth and her baby was clearly ill and suffering from scabies from not being washed. All they had eaten for four months was the maize they grow in their garden, but even that was beginning to dry out. It is a desperate situation that makes you feel helpless and so so grateful.
Shiama and I drove back through Masailand on the roof of the jeep telling people of our imminent arrival by loudspeaker. I'm so excited that I finally feel as if my coming to Kenya will benefit others. It feels like an accomplishment to have worked hard to arrange our own project and that we have teamed up with such hardworking, passionate people. We are blessed to have this time together to bring people together in this special way.
I hope all will go well. I will let you know how it goes when I return.
Thankyou for all your help and support, both financially and through your words of encouragement.
love,
Helen x
