The Rhine is surrounded by very big, steep hills. There are grapes growing on almost every hillside, also. This is a major wine-producing area. In fact, wine making, along with tourism, are the only things keeping these cities alive now. In the middle ages, they were very rich and powerful because of their location on the Rhine, but now they are mostly just small villages with tourist shops. They are still very beautiful, though
