Woohoo! American road trip! The start of our Pacific Coast Highway adventure begins. After our day at Universal studios, we hit the road getting into Santa Barbara Sunrise RV park late at night. Just like everything else, the Americans seem to take camping to the absolute extreme. The RV's are unlike any camper van I've ever seen, more like a coach than a caravan. Big enough to even put the Mordey's to shame!
Santa Barbara was an absolutely beautiful place with a glistening beach and a lovely traditional wooden pier. But only a little time to sample our first salt water taffy then hit the road. Next stop, Morro Bay.
We headed out early on day 2, and that's when the beauty of the pacific coast highway 1 really began. We stopped off for an amazing breakfast in Cambria. I am seriously starting to get on board with this whole weird sweet savoury breakfast mixture! Who ever knew that eggs and sausage with pancakes and maple syrup could be so damn good!?? I want to eat this everyday :)
I have to say that day was a holiday highlight. Breaking up the journey with a little look at Hearst Castle but then heading over for some kindle time on the beautiful beach opposite instead. Stopping off to see an amazing elephant seal colony who were lazing happily just yards away from where we stood. The views whilst we were on the highway were breathtaking and we had to make pit stops as we kept spotting whales from the road. Hmm, it doesn't get much better than this! Rounded off with the most perfect service station stop, eating salmon tacos whale spotting again!
Our 3rd stop off was Pfeiffer Big Sur state park. Again the next day we made an early start and headed to the nearby Julia Pfeiffer state park (not to be confused:) to have a look at a beautiful coastal waterfall. We tried to get into the town of Carmel on the way up the coast but our way was blocked by some sort of classic car festival. Instead we carried on up to Monterey where we booked ourselves onto a whale watching trip. We were really lucky and saw large groups of graceful hump back whales who came up close to the boat, slapping their tails and swimming to the surface. As well as lots of sea lions who have learnt that if they swim behind the whales they can pick up their scraps! Cheeky little fellas! .... It was a great experience.
Our fourth stop off was the Redwoods RV park near Santa Cruz. We spent our last day relaxing on the boardwalk. We went on an old wooden roller coaster and took a train into the redwood forest. Culinary highlight of the day being cinnamon pretzels. Yum! Next stop, the bright lights of San Francisco!
