Matt At Checkpoint Charlie
This was the extent of American regulation of the border. The philosophy was free movement: people could come and go as they pleased. The checkpoint was there only to make sure that people who went east actually made it back. On the soviet side was a massive complex of checkpoints and security to make sure people could not leave. The only people who could leave were allied troops who had free access throughout Berlin and those with permits. No one else could leave east Berlin once they came in.
