Post War Division Of Germany And Berlin
The city was divided like the country: into soviet, American, British, and French parts. The French only got in on the division later and got small parts of previously American and British sectors of both the city and country. Why they got anything is beyond me. Anyway, Berlin was located deep within east Germany, behind the iron curtain, so the western part of Berlin was an oasis in a sea of communism all around it. There were only a few routes from west Germany into west Berlin, so that was a hassle for the western allies.
